Mahón, June 26, 2026
Organized by the Military Commander of the Balearic Islands, a commemoration was held this morning for those who died in the accident that occurred at the Llucalari Battery on June 26, 1953. The accident was caused by the accidental deflagration of 150 kg of gunpowder during a live-fire exercise, resulting in the deaths of 23 soldiers.
The ceremony took place in two parts. The first part was held at the military pantheon in the Mahón cemetery, where a prayer service was held. Following this, a ceremony was held at the site of Gun No. 1 of the Vickers Battery, at the La Mola Fortress, where an honor guard from the San Isidro UAPRO (Special Protection Unit) formed and paid tribute to the deceased.
This event was chaired by Colonel Rafael Sancho Márquez, by delegation of the Military Commander of the Balearic Islands, Major General Ricardo Esteban Cabrejos.
