At the end of 1896, the construction works began on the Canal de San Jorge, later called Alfonso XIII, with the aim of improving the maritime link between La Mola and Mahón.
The initial work consisted of clearing large masses of land, coming from the emptying of the canal box above and below the sea water level. The start of the works was slow, but soon after they were accelerated by the war against the United States of America.
This initiative allowed the safe arrival of the motorboats and barges to the Freus dock, without having to bend the tip of Fort Felipet during the eastern storms.
