Mahón, December 20, 2024
The Consortium of the Military Museum of Menorca and Military Historical Heritage of the Port of Mahón and Cala de San Esteban will celebrate next year 2025 the 175th anniversary of the beginning of the works and the 150th anniversary of the completion of the works of the fortress of Isabel II, in the Port of Mahón.
This great work marked a milestone in the rich history of the island of Menorca and highlighted the great geostrategic interest of the port of Mahón for the control of the Mediterranean Sea, for which this wonderful island suffered over the centuries the desires and ambitions of all the most important countries of the time.
To commemorate this important event, the Military Consortium has planned to carry out various events throughout the coming year, which is about to begin. The dates are still pending confirmation, but the programme of activities includes, starting in February, a series of conferences and round tables, exhibitions, a photography and painting competition, a military music concert, a civil swearing-in ceremony and a central celebration event that will most likely take place next summer.
All these activities will be announced in detail in due time to encourage and facilitate the participation of all interested persons and entities.
The Throne Room of the Isabel II Palace in Mahón hosted the presentation of the commemorative events this morning. Representatives of some of the organisations that make up the Consortium attended.
The president of the Permanent Commission of the Consortium of the Military Museum of Menorca and Military Historical Heritage of the Port of Mahón and Cala de San Esteban, Colonel Víctor Manuel Herrero Álvarez, stated in said presentation that “the civil swearing-in of the flag will be one of the central acts of the commemorative events and, for this reason, we invite all citizens to participate in such an important event”.
