The Cloister of Carmen de Mahón hosts the exhibition “250 years. Spaniards in the birth of a nation”

On June 18, at 7 p.m., the opening of the Exhibition “250 years. Spaniards in the birth of a nation” will take place in the Auditorium of the Cloister del Carmen.

It is an ambitious temporary exhibition created by the Instituto de Historia y Cultura Militar in Madrid, to commemorate the Principal Ephemeride of the year 2026 of the Army of the Kingdom of Spain. Its purpose is to illuminate a crucial, and often unknown, chapter of our international history: the decisive Spanish aid to the United States during its War of Independence, focusing on the Spanish contribution to the triumph of the thirteen colonies against the British Empire. Through this tour, we will discover how Spain, through financing, sending supplies, weapons and of course, the bravery of men like Bernardo de Gálvez, Luis de Unzaga or Fernando de Leyba was a fundamental piece for the birth of the United States of America to be a reality. It is a story of alliances, military strategy and a shared legacy that has united both nations for two and a half centuries.

The event, which will be presided over by General Javier Mur Lalaguna, Deputy Director of Heritage at the Institute of Military History and Culture, will feature a round table led by the General of the Army, D. Luis Alejandre and the historian and writer D. Miguel Angel Casasnovas to end with a subsequent tour of the exhibition.

The Exhibition will remain until June 30, with opening hours from Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and will remain closed on Sundays. Entrance is free.
