The Es Soleiet Multipurpose Hall in Es Castell is hosting the exhibition “Historical Flags of Spain” from Monday, March 9, until March 27. The exhibition offers a journey through the history of the Spanish flag.
A result of the collaboration between the Es Castell Town Hall, the Balearic Center for Military History and Culture, through the Menorca Military History Museum and the Menorca Military Consortium, this exhibition is the perfect opportunity to explore our heritage in an engaging and visual way.
Furthermore, the municipality of Es Castell is not just any location; its military heritage and historical significance in the Mediterranean for centuries make it the ideal host for this exhibition.
The exhibition comprises a total of 24 flags that reflect the evolution of our national emblem from the time of the Catholic Monarchs to the present day.
In Spain, we could perhaps say that the first emblem used was the red plume with which the Iberians adorned the bronze helmets they wore. It is interesting to note that this color would become our quintessential national color; so much so that the cockade on Spanish military caps was red until it was replaced by the bicolor flag in the mid-19th century.
Under the reign of Isabella II, the bicolor flag was extended to the Army, thus unifying the flag of Spain. By Royal Decree of October 13, 1843, all Army ensigns were replaced with new red and yellow ones, colors previously used by the Navy and some battalions of the National Militia.
The exhibition will remain open until March 27 with the following schedule:
Thursdays and Fridays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Saturdays from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM and from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
Admission is free.
