On November 30, 1920, at dusk, the ship “Giralda” left the port of Barcelona with 36 anarcho-syndicalist militants and the lawyer and councilor of the Barcelona City Council, Lluís Companys, who were detained in the Barcelona Modelo prison, bound for the fortress of La Mola. Among the prisoners was Salvador Seguí Rubinat (Lleida, September 23, 1887 – Barcelona, March 10, 1923), known as El noi del Sucre (‘El Chico del Azúcar’), one of the most prominent people of anarcho-syndicalism in Spain early 20th century.
From the Consell de Cent street barracks, a hundred guards came out under the command of a commander, who established a surveillance service throughout the journey. Police precautions were also taken at the Barcelona pier to prevent demonstrations. At 4.30 pm, three trucks from the military administration arrived at the dock, guarded by a picket from the Civil Guard; In these trucks were the trade unionists who were transferred aboard the “Giralda”, which set sail at 5.30 pm.
The civil governor of Barcelona, Martínez Anido, justified the “apartment” to defend the lives of the trade unionists themselves.
