Mahon, October 13, 2025
The multipurpose hall of the Isabel II Palace in Mahón will host the photography exhibition “Horse Breeding of the Armed Forces” from today, Monday, October 13, until October 30.
After its visit to the Ferreries Sociocultural Center, where it was open from September 23 to October 3, the exhibition moves to the municipality on the eastern side of the island.
In this exhibition, visitors will be able to learn about the work carried out by the Horse Breeding Service, attached to the Ministry of Defense. This unit specializes in the breeding, improvement, and training of Spanish horse breeds, as well as in the knowledge, trades, and techniques related to the world of horses.
The breeding of purebred Spanish horses dates back to 1570 with the creation of the Royal Stables of Córdoba. Years later, in 1864, due to a shortage of horses, the Horse Breeding Service was established, under the responsibility of the Ministry of War, specifically the Cavalry, as this department had the most qualified personnel for this task.
Consequently, it is safe to say that the best horses bred in Spain descend from selected lines obtained from military stud farms. In fact, they are the main suppliers of stallions from various depots that, strategically distributed throughout the country, contribute to the improvement of the Spanish equine herd.
The exhibition will be open Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Free admission.
