On the occasion of Constitution Day on December 6, it is worth recalling, according to the Ministry of Defense, that national defense is based on the full exercise of the rights and public freedoms recognized in the 1978 Spanish Constitution and the 1945 Charter of the United Nations.
The Spanish Constitution establishes that Spaniards have the right and the duty to defend Spain.
The Constitution assigns the Armed Forces the mission of guaranteeing the sovereignty and independence of Spain, defending its territorial integrity and the constitutional order. All public authorities will contribute to achieving this goal.
These Armed Forces are comprised of the Army, the Air Force, and the Navy.
The King, as Head of State, holds supreme command of the Armed Forces and, with prior authorization from the Cortes Generales (Parliament), has the power to declare war and make peace.
