The Isabel II Fortress in La Mola is one of the largest European fortresses built in the 19th century, with a magnificent layout and excellent conservation.
With the island devoid of fortifications after the demolition of the Castillo de San Felipe in the time of Carlos III (1782) and with the “entente cordiale” between France and Great Britain reeling, the Spanish Government of Isabel II decided to give Menorca a great fortress to ensure its defense.
Built between the years 1848 and 1875, the constant technical advance of the artillery of the moment forced the initial project to be modified several times.
It is, without a doubt, an essential visit if you come to Menorca.
