In 1798 the English built in front of the Castillo de San Felipe, at the point where Lazareto Island is located, a defense tower, the Torre de San Felipet, whose objective was to cross fires with the gunboats located in the Castle to try bring down the enemy ships that tried to enter the port of Mahón.
The strategic location of both fortifications near the mouth of the port roadstead was fundamental for the defense of the port of Mahón, in particular, and of the Island, in general.
At the foot of the Torre de San Felipet a battery was built with similar characteristics to the one that existed before, at the end of the seventeenth century, but which were demolished in 1782 after the surrender of Menorca to the Spanish troops.
