Traces of British times in the Museum of Menorca

In the Museum of Menorca we will find numerous traces of the British period. In the 18th century room, it is convenient to look at a display case containing a set of bronze weights, which Governor Kane had cast in London (1724), to bring order to the existing anarchy in the matter of weights and measures. Circular in shape, they have a royal crown in relief, the initials GR (Georgius Rex), the name Minorica and their weight in ounces.

In the same room there is a drawing by Giuseppe Chiesa, View of the port of Maó, ca.1765, which the painter dedicates to HRH the Duke of York. Among many interesting details, in the painting we can see the clock tower – indicated in point 1 of this itinerary – in its original location, on the Pont des Castell.

In the cartography room, in addition to abundant maps of the time, the great coat of arms of Great Britain is exposed, which had emblazoned the frontispiece of the fortress of San Felipe.
