A museum with a lot of history

The building that occupies the Military Museum of Menorca is the old Calacorp Barracks, built in 1771, when the damage caused to the defense of the Castle of San Felipe by the proximity of the suburb became clear.

For this reason, the entire suburb immediately around the castle was demolished and the new one was built further from the fortification, with a rectilinear layout of its streets and a large esplanade bordered by three large buildings where the English troops stayed.

The Calacorp Barracks is made up of a two-story rectangular building with a tower in the central part. In 1781 it housed the Spanish troops that besieged the Castillo de San Felipe. Later, it became a Military Hospital and, in 1811, it hosted the Artillery Academy during the Napoleonic invasion of Spain.

When the Isabel II de la Mola Fortress was built in the mid-19th century, it housed the families of the workers who worked there and, again at the end of the century and until a few years ago, it was also the residence of the Plana Mayor del Regimiento of Artillery of the Coast of Menorca.

The Military Museum of Menorca was inaugurated, initially, in an ancient 18th century powder magazine that was part of the Castillo de San Felipe.

On the ground floor and on the first floor there are, under the vaulted corridors, more than 18 rooms in which the public can take a tour of all the periods of Menorca’s history, from prehistory to our contemporary history.

This year the design of the infantry rooms, the Engineers room (sappers and transmissions) and, finally, the Health room were reformed. Therefore, there are three new rooms for visits by the general public.

The Military Museum of Menorca also includes, for two years, a new access to the old underground tunnels of the Civil War, located in the basement of the Plaza Explanada de Es Castell. During the tour of these tunnels, visitors will be able to hear the exact noise made by the planes and the bombs they dropped, causing a chilling sensation, according to some testimonies who have made the visit and experienced the events.
