In the different dominations that Menorca had, the enemy squads chose different landing points.
In September 1708, James Stanhope, commanding a British squadron, landed at Alcaufar, in the southeast of the Island. In April 1756, the Duke of Richelieu landed at Ciudadela. In August 1781, the Duke of Crillón landed in Cala Mezquida and in November 1798 General Charles Stuart landed in Port Addaia and conquered the Island in just one week.
This was due to the great Castillo de San Felipe, an extraordinary defensive fortress that always fulfilled its mission of closing the port of Mahón.
The 16th century Spanish Castle had four bastions and all four were oriented to the four cardinal points. In addition, it had a dry moat and the Castle took approximately 50 years to build.
