Farragut was born in Tennessee in 1801
David Farragut was a prominent admiral in the United States Navy during the American Civil War. He was born in the city of Knoxville, Tennessee, on July 5, 1801. Although his birthplace has no direct relationship with Menorca, it is known that his father, Jordi Farragut Mesquida, was originally from the island and emigrated to America to beginning of the 19th century.
David Farragut began his Navy career at age 9 and became the first admiral of the United States Navy. He was a Civil War hero, and is credited with the famous quote “Damn it, the torpedo boat is in my way!” during the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864.
Although David Farragut was born and raised in the United States, his family heritage and roots were in Menorca, making him a prominent figure in the island’s history. His legacy continues to be remembered on both sides of the Atlantic.
