The fear that the rich heritage that the Ministry of Defense has in the Port of Mahón would deteriorate, as it was left unused by the Army, led to the need to create a body made up of entities that would be involved in the restoration and conservation project of the same, with a common objective: the conservation and restoration of all the parts that will be transferred to the Consortium and of which the Ministry of Defense holds the ownership of the land.
Therefore, on June 22, 1998, the Agreement for the constitution of the Consortium of the Menorca Military Museum and Military Historical Heritage of the Port of Mahón and Cala San Esteban was signed, a public entity made up of the Ministry of Defense, the Balearic Government , the Consell Insular de Menorca and the municipalities of Mahón and Es Castell.
The duration of the signed agreement is fifty years from the date it is signed and the Ministry of Defense assigns the Consortium, for that period of time, the use of the land and facilities of the following monuments: Castillo de San Felipe , Military Museum (former Barracks of Cala Corb), Torre de Felipet, Torre d’en Penjat and the Isabel II Fortress, popularly known as La Mola.
